This is my favourite part - because this is where real change starts.

When clients understand why their skin is behaving the way it is, something shifts.
Their shoulders drop. The panic softens. Adherence improves.

And that matters because anxiety about skin is, in itself, another stress signal 🫣

This is the language I often use in clinic (feel free to borrow it):

“I often explain stressed skin like a smoke alarm. Your skin isn’t the problem - it’s a signal. Redness, breakouts and flares are the alarm going off to say something upstream needs support. We can absolutely calm things topically, but if stress keeps switching the alarm on, repair will be slower. My job is to help you understand why it’s happening and support your skin from both sides so it can actually settle.”

Simple.
Grounded.
Non-blaming.

When clients feel their skin is communicating, not failing, the vicious cycle eases:
Less anxiety → less stress signalling → calmer skin.

This is also where your confidence as a therapist really matters.
Not in knowing everything; but in being able to translate complex physiology into something your client can take on board and do something with.

It’s exactly this inside–outside connection that I teach inside The Skin Barrier Solution - so therapists can feel confident in how they can help their clients and bring more of themselves into the treatment room.

Key takeaways

  • Understanding the why behind skin problems reduces anxiety (and inflammation)

  • The skin is signalling, not misbehaving

  • Clear explanations improve trust and outcomes

I’ve loved popping into your inbox the last few days to chat about the main trigger I see in 99% of my clients, which I know is also going be driving things for your client group too. I really hope you have found it helpful.

If you are ready to continue your education in the internal root causes of your clients skin problems, and create your own toolkit of diet and lifestyle changes you can confidently and safely share in clinic, SBS is the course for you.

As always, you’re welcome to comment below with questions or reflections. I read every one.

With you,
Chloe

Calm Skin [BONUS lesson ] The Stress–Pigmentation Connection: A Missing Piece in the Puzzle
For a long time, pigmentation has been taught as a largely topical issue. We’re told it’s genetic. That it’s bad luck. That it’s caused by too much sun. And that the solution is strong actives, peels, lasers, wide-brim sun hats, and patience. I believed that too.Dark patches on the skin, how could that possibly be influenced by diet, stress, or lifestyle? But once you start understanding skin bey...
Calm Skin [lesson 2]: Why barrier repair can stall under stress 🔥
Last time we talked about stressed skin as a smoke alarm 🔥 A signal, not the problem itself. Today, let’s talk about what happens when that alarm keeps ringing 🔔 When stress hormones like cortisol stay elevated, the skin shifts into survival mode. Repair is no longer the priority. I’m sure you have heard of the sabre tooth tiger analogy; as long as there are no gaping holes in our skin, our bod...
Calm Skin [lesson 1]: When skin flares, it’s rarely random
If you’ve been in clinic a while and increasingly thinking, “Why am I seeing so many red, reactive, inflamed skins?” - you’re not imagining it. Stress is one of the most consistent threads I see running through acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, eczema and chronically sensitised skin. And not always the obvious, life-is-on-fire kind of stress either. I often explain it like this: The skin is a...
