Calm Skin [lesson 2]: Why barrier repair can stall under stress š„
Last time we talked about stressed skin as a smoke alarm š„ A signal, not the problem itself.
Today, letās talk about what happens when that alarm keeps ringing š
When stress hormones like cortisol stay elevated, the skin shifts into survival mode. Repair is no longer the priority. Iām sure you have heard of the sabre tooth tiger analogy; as long as there are no gaping holes in our skin, our body will send reserves to other areas when under stress.
Hereās what that looks like on a skin function level:
⢠Barrier lipids are broken down
⢠Antimicrobial peptides are reduced
⢠Keratinisation becomes disorganised
⢠The microbiome becomes less stable
⢠Repair and wound healing slow down
In other words: the barrier becomes more permeable and reactiveā¦..resulting in breakouts, flares and skin conditions appearing.
This is why āleaky skinā isnāt just about avoiding harsh cleansers or over-exfoliation.
You can be doing all the ārightā things topically and still see slow or inconsistent progress if internal stress signalling is high.
I often say to therapists:
You can apply the best barrier creams in the world - but if the alarm is still blaring internally, repair will always be slower than expected.
This is also why stressed skin can feel unpredictable.
One week itās calm. The next it flaresā¦.seemingly out of nowhere and so you and your client continue working through every skincare product witht he word calming in it š³
- Iāve been there!
Itās not random.
Itās cumulative.
And once you have this knowledge, you can start to understand and work with skins differently.
Key takeaways
-
Chronic stress weakens barrier repair from the inside out - even with the best microbiome boosting and corneotherapeutic skincare
-
Cortisol disrupts lipids, immunity and healing - leading to dysfunctional skin
-
Topical work alone canāt override ongoing stress signals
Next, Iāll share how you can explain this to clients without overwhelming them. And how these conversations not only help reduce anxiety and inflammation in real time, but will help make you the go-to expert for red and sensitised skins.
Don't forget you can post any questions and comment below, I'll be sure to answer them for you.
